How to collect emails in DMs without being annoying
Five rules for asking for an email or phone number in a chat, so people actually say yes.
By the AUTODMs team ·
DMs are personal, so asking for an email there has to feel like a fair trade, not a form. These rules keep your opt-in rate high.
1. Give first
Send what they asked for (the link, the recipe, the price) before asking for anything. Then offer something extra in exchange for an email.
2. Say exactly what they’ll get
“Type your email and I’ll send the 7-day plan in a minute” works far better than “Can I have your email?”.
3. One question at a time
Ask for the email. If you need a phone number, ask later in the conversation, or in a follow-up.
4. Check the answer
Typos happen. AUTODMs validates the format and asks again once if it looks wrong, so your list stays clean.
